While the fight for… whatever they’re fighting for unfolds on the main land mass, Memo is running interference in the air, fending off Rocket reinforcements and strays. He’s really not looking forward to fighting… but that’s not the same thing as being unwilling. So when he tags the familiar silhouette in the sky, his stomach drops.

Oh, great. More people contesting the airspace. Of course, she’d known. That was what her contacts had spoken of, after all. Though anyone trying to stop her outright was probably league. Those guys as always decided that they had the right to do whatever they wanted. Well, Rocket too, but the League was who acted all high and mighty about it. Like that guy.

She remembered him from the crater. He was the one guy that was lovey-dovey with the scaredy cat. Well, at least that was her impression from their brief encounters. She hadn’t really learned his name, it was an annoying one. Best not to try and butcher it from memory. “Oh, hi there. Kind of seems like I am, so you are wrong again already.” She sighed, having understood what he meant already. But acting difficult about it was just in her blood.
Still though, he could fly alongside her if he wanted to, but she was not going to stop without a proper reason to. And no, ‘the league says so’ was decidedly not a reason. “There might be a distortion here, so I have to investigate. When Hoenn gets weird, those often appear. I don’t need a babysitter. Or anyone who just tells me I can’t do things.” She did have it to about there with people that treated her like a kid, after all.

As soon as the words left his lips he knew she would argue them. She’d done nothing but argue, on their excursions into the Fortree rift. Why he thought she would suddenly go quietly when the stakes were objectively much higher was a mystery to him.

Oh, so he was not speaking as an adult? Now that was something. Almost gave her the chills or something like that. Well, probably not, really. It didn’t matter at all. Sure, he did not appeal to the authority of an adult, but rather to that of a League Captain. Which was about as bogus an argument as the adult one, really.

Hence, she sighed, but did not stop, still. “Yeah, because League Captains just guzzled wisdom by the gallon and now disperse that,” she replied, clearly annoyed. “Besides, what kind of backwards logic is that, anyway. For my own safety you want to use force against me? That’s just dumb. I can look after myself, I don’t need the protection of you or the League. Not like it’s ever there when I actually need it.” Lash added a pout but stood firm in her decision. The argument was lame, after all.

Good, good, he saw reason. Lash was not sure if she should commend that or not. On one hand, that was something almost akin to common human decency, a rarity for the League in her experience. But on the other hand, he really should do his job better. If she was more deeply connected to Rocket, then even letting her any closer was probably bad.

Well, not her problem. “Well, I am looking for the usual. Ultra Beasts, wormholes, but mostly because those tend to attract space-time distortions. Rumour has it that one is brewing on the island. So, I came to check it out myself, a flyover maybe, that island can’t be all that big. Or is there something subterranean again?”

Yeah, that man was not taking her seriously. She could see that. It wasn’t exactly difficult. He was like most men his age. They saw someone looking like a kid and immediately deemed themselves superior. If she actually looked her age and said the same things, he would probably just show her outright suspicion and drive her away. Yet, this felt somehow worse.

Ugh. Annoying. “I don’t really need an escort, but whatever, if you don’t have anything better to do, I guess? I can look after myself. Have to. No one else will. At least not when it is actually necessary.” Lash pouted, clearly irritated. In her opinion, she had every right to. After all, being stuck looking like this she could not exactly live a normal adult life of her own. And without a family willing to recognize her like this either, she had to make do still. People like this guy, they always acted like they cared, but their responsibility ended within sight. She didn’t blame them, per se. She was just annoyed by the hypocrisy.
“I don’t need convincing. I have conviction. If there is something that can help here, I will investigate. Else I will leave on my own. Not sure why people can’t just accept that simple logic.”

If ‘taking her seriously’ meant ‘leaving her to her own devices in an active warzone’, then, no, Memo was not taking her seriously. She could have been a wizened old crone with baggy tits and liver spots and he still would have asked to escort her.

“War is a waste. Especially in Hoenn, when stuff outside the scope of anyone constantly happens,” she replied, throwing up her arms in annoyance. All of this was just so annoying. Couldn’t they have their little spats after she was done investigating? It wasn’t like she was really taking either side here, anyway.

That included his insistence at following her around. She just started off towards the island proper, not accepting a race, nor rejecting it. “I can’t make you do anything anyway,” she hence started, accepting that she was only in charge of her own life. Lash just insisted that she was the one in charge of it in general. “Though I still don’t get the priorities here. Not like you could just follow me back to the mainland without giving up your spot here, anyway. It’s just…kind of stupid to try and keep people from coming to an island when everyone and their mom has a flying Pokemon, you know?”

War is a waste. He caught the words under the buzz of his dragonfly’s wings, and it made something squeeze in his heart. War was a waste. Waste of time, waste of life, waste of resources. Especially knowing Hoenn was the origin point for the end of all worlds… squabbles over turf seemed particularly egregious.

But here they were, despite everything. All the stupidity and hurt, all the senseless violence… everything that Memo disagreed with down to the last cell in his body, it was all happening, and he had his part to play. If it meant Lash didn’t get gunned down by some trigger happy Leaguer or churned under the surface of the Rocket machine, he would be here, in his stupid little uniform, doing his stupid little job.

“I get it,” he said, Nike pulling loops in the air around her. “It’s frustrating. But I gotta do what I can to make sure people stay safe-- including you. That’s what it’s about, for me.” As if to prove his point, a series of explosions went off in the middle distance, the visual of the violence hidden by the fog. “We gotta be careful getting close. Both Factions have shoot first, question later types on payroll.”

“Frankly, I could never get behind that. Probably because it’s only skin-deep with people. Protecting others, that is.” She did not elaborate much on that, believing matters to be rather self-evident in that regard. Even this man only sought to protect those he could see from imminent danger. He was not building shelter for the homeless, finding work for the unemployed. That sort of thing.

Lash did not believe in heroes because of that. They lacked depth and sustainability to truly help people. That was why more often than not they ended up imposing their will on others or fighting them. Those people fighting on the ground there probably could get along if they properly addressed matters instead of trying to be heroes -or villains – of their own story. “I am always careful. That’s how I stay alive,” she continued, definitely speaking well beyond her apparent age in this. “We probably should not make such an enticing target all the way up here, considering that. You did make it sound as if you clearly do not currently control this airspace, after all.” Especially considering that she could already make out something flying not too far ahead of them. Question was just what faction they belonged to. She hoped Rocket, just so she could slip away one way or another.

“Well, your words, not mine,” she replied even though she very much agreed. She had formed that opinion of him long ago, when they first met even. All three of them had been fools in their own right, sometimes helpful, sometimes obtrusive. On some level, she knew that these people simply wanted to help. Even now, that was undeniably that man’s intent. He was not the kind of League person that would simply go and impose his will on others for no reason at all.

He probably thought that this was for her best.
Hence, he was a fool.

Still though, she could accept as much. “We probably should,” she replied before focusing on the skies ahead. Something bright was definitely coming their way now. “No, screw that, bad idea,” she replied before urging her Hydreigon to fall back and to the side, in time to evade a bout of fire shot at them from the incoming Charizard.
Whoever that was probably had not aimed well at all, but she was not going to stick around for too long to find out. Instead, she tried to put Memo between herself and the unknown assailant – ready to bail at a moment’s notice. “No one truly controls anything, that’s right,” she agreed with him despite what she was planning to do.
